Young People

Setting off on a sponsored stilt walk Taking a break on a sponsored stilt walkThe Operational Management Team (OMT) is a group of young people who are employed part time by the Café in the roles of Bar Manager, Assistant Bar Manager, Chef and Assistant Chef.

These jobs at the Café allow us to learn a range of skills and access training that will help us in later life when we begin to look for work.  The whole process starts off after the advertisement of the post with the application and interview process so that even those who are not successful in getting a job are learning these skills.  We are all debriefed on our interviews so that we know what we did well and what we would need to improve for future interviews.

The training package for each job is a unique but there are a few overlaps between some including REHIS hygiene training, stock control training, IT training, learning how to order supplies, telephone manner, budgeting, organising young volunteers and appropriate record keeping.

We only hold our posts for up to 4 months at a time- a one month trial period and then a three month contract.  The jobs are re-advertised every 4 months to allow as many young people as possible to have an opportunity to gain these life skills but we can also reapply for our jobs if we wish to continue them.  Some of us have even used the experience we have had in one post to apply for another.
